Box Office Round-Up ~ 7/6/26
The one-two punch of the World Cup and America’s 250th birthday this past weekend knocked pretty much everything at the box office down a notch or two. Minions & Monsters won the weekend with a $37 million, giving the new release the dubious distinction of having the weakest box office debut of the entire Despicable Me/Minions franchise. Meanwhile, Toy Story 5 moved to second place with $31 million in its third weekend. That 56% drop from last weekend is steep, but overall the Disney/Pixar sequel has grossed $366 million domestically, putting it just $5 million away from becoming the second biggest U.S. release of 2026.
Another new release opened in third place this weekend, with Angel Studios scoring another surprise win with Young Washington, which opened to a $19.3 million gross. Since their breakout success with 2023’s Sound of Freedom, the studio has seen a handful of releases with better-than-expected box office numbers, including Kevin James-led rom-com Solo Mio from earlier this year.
On the flip side, Supergirl continues its disappointing run in theaters, moving to fourth place with just $8.6 million in its second weekend. Jammed between Toy Story 5 and Minions & Monsters, the latest Warner Bros./DC would-be blockbuster seems to be a victim of a confluence of obstacles… poor reviews, a crowded field at the theaters, and a moviegoing public with serious superhero fatigue. How this affects DC’s longterm theatrical plans remains to be seen.
Disclosure Day took fifth place with $5.7 million, finally clearing $100 million in the U.S. and having the distinction of just barely knocking Obsession out of the top five. The box office gets even more crowded next weekend as Disney loads up another potential big moneymaker with their live action adaptation of Moana.
