Box Office Round-Up ~ 7/27/26

Unsurprisingly, The Odyssey took advantage of a weekend light on new releases to win the box office for a second weekend in a row. Grossing $90 million, it’s now at $289 million in the U.S. and $639 million worldwide. It’s on track to clear $400 million domestically if not more than that.

Speaking of Greek mythology, the sole new release in the top five was Hadestown: The Musical, a filmed performance of the acclaimed Broadway show. Grossing $10.2 million on just 1900 screens, it snuck into third place between Moana ($10.6 million in second place) and Toy Story 5 ($10.1 million in fourth place).

Filmed Broadway performances have been trending in recent years (Disney+ features Hamilton and the stage version of Frozen, for example), and this could be an indicator that the right Broadway show could find an audience on the big screen, without having to go through the trouble of a full-on feature film adaptation.

Speaking of Toy Story 5, it has now grossed almost $450 million domestically and has officially joined Toy Story 3 and Toy Story 4 in clearing a billion dollars worldwide. Minions & Monsters may not be able to join the Despicable Me billion-dollar club, as it took fifth place with another disappointing weekend, grossing $9.7 million for a domestic total of $155 million so far. The final weekend of July sees the arrival of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which looks to unseat The Odyssey, though it’s likely that both movies will see big numbers over the next couple of weekends.
