Box Office Round-Up ~ 1/12/26

Despite multiple new releases hitting theaters, Avatar: Fire and Ash once again won the weekend at the box office. Adding another $21.3 million to its gross, the sequel now has $342 million domestically and $1.2 billion worldwide. It’s likely to end up with total numbers lower than Avatar: The Way of Water, but it’s still another huge success that has likely already greenlit a fourth film.

In second place, new release Primate debuted with $11.1 million, better than expected numbers for the killer chimp movie from director Johannes Roberts (47 Meters Down). The Housemaid remained in the top five, taking third place with $10.9 million, putting it just shy of $100 million overall after four weekends. A sequel, The Housemaid’s Secret (based on the second book in author Freida McFadden’s series), is already in development.

Zootopia 2 reached $378 million domestically after seven weekends, taking fourth place with $10.1 million and passing Wicked: For Good as the fifth highest grossing movie of 2025. Rounding out the top five was Greenland 2: Migration. The original Greenland was released straight to streaming and VOD in December 2020, so there’s no direct box office comparison, but the post-apocalyptic Gerard Butler sequel will likely need to clear $22-25 million to measure up to its predecessor.
