Box Office Round-Up ~ 8/31/26

As August and the summer movie season drew to a close, Spider-Man: Brand New Day once again landed atop the box office charts for a fifth weekend in a row. It added $22.5 million to its $891 million domestic haul. It may not quite reach a billion in the U.S. but it’ll be very close.

The real story of the weekend, however, was the debut of Coyote vs. Acme. Unceremoniously dumped as a tax write-off by Warner Bros., the Looney Tunes live action/animation hybrid was eventually picked up by Ketchup Entertainment, grossing $15.9 million in its opening weekend. It’s hard to say if the movie will be profitable in the long run, but positive word of mouth could carry it heading into September. Regardless of the numbers, it’s a win for the creative forces behind the movie getting to see their work up on the screen rather than in the trash folder of a hard drive somewhere.

The Odyssey, the summer’s other box office mainstay, stayed in third place with $14.3 million for a U.S. total of $563 million. Insidious: Out of the Further moved to fourth place in its second weekend with $10.2 million, passing $40 million overall. In fifth place, post-apocalyptic thriller The Dog Stars from director Ridley Scott (Prometheus, The Martian) opened with a disappointing $7.7 million following a tepid marketing campaign and mixed reviews from critics.

The upcoming Labor Day weekend will have new releases hitting theaters on both Wednesday and Friday. Survival sequel Fall 2: Deadpoint and concert documentary Katy Perry: The Lifetimes Tour - Live from Paris premiere midweek. Friday sees the arrival of Adam Wingard-directed actioner Onslaught, crime drama By Any Means, The Sun Never Sets from writer/director Joe Swanberg, and the 20th anniversary re-release of Disney/Pixar’s Cars.
