Box Office Round-Up ~ 4/27/26
We were perhaps hasty to assume The Super Mario Galaxy Movie would win one more weekend. To be fair, music biopics have had an uneven track record at the box office in recent years. For every Elvis or Bohemian Rhapsody there’s a Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere or Better Man. But even sixteen years after his death, Michael Jackson remains a moneymaker. Starring Jaafar Jackson as his famous uncle, Michael opened to a massive $97.2 million domestic haul, the second highest opening weekend of the year and one of the biggest openings ever for a musical biopic.
Mario moved to second place, grossing $20.5 million for $385 million domestically so far, with $400 million within reach in the next couple weeks. Project Hail Mary took third place with $12.8 million, passing the $300 million domestic mark. Lee Cronin’s The Mummy moved to fourth place in its second weekend with $5.5 million, while The Drama finished its fourth weekend in fifth place with $2.6 million.
This coming weekend sees the start of May and the beginning of several weekends with bigger releases. This Friday includes The Devil Wears Prada 2, followed by Mortal Kombat II and Billie Eilish: Hit Me Hard and Soft — The Tour on 5/8, with The Mandalorian & Grogu arriving on 5/22.
