Box Office Round-Up ~ 7/8/24

The post-4th of July weekend saw another animated sequel win the box office, as Despicable Me 4 grossed $75 million in its first full weekend. Combined with $47 million on Thursday and Friday (it premiered on July 4th), it has already passed $120 million overall. This latest success makes the Despicable Me series the highest grossing animated franchise of all time.

In second place, Inside Out 2 lost some of its audience to Gru and the Minions, but still took in $30.3 million in its fourth weekend, passing $500 million overall with $600 million not out of the question. In third, A Quiet Place: Day One had a solid sophomore weekend, grossing $20.6 million for $93 million overall domestically.

Another horror title (and sequel) debuted in fourth place, as writer/director Ti West’s MaXXXine (the followup to X and Pearl) grossed $6.7 million… a massive success considering the film’s budget of just $1 million. Rounding out the top five, Bad Boys: Ride or Die took in $6.6 million, for domestic total of $177 million over five weekends.
