Box Office Round-Up ~ 7/3/24

June came to a close with Inside Out 2 winning the box office once again, albeit just barely. With a third-weekend gross of $57.5 million, the year’s most successful film ($460 million and counting) beat out A Quiet Place: Day One, which debuted with a very solid $52.2 million. The horror prequel now has the best opening weekend of the franchise so far.

In third place, director/co-writer/star Kevin Costner’s ambitious Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 1 debuted with just $11 million. It managed to beat out expectations, which sadly weren’t very high to begin with. This was a passion project for Costner, who personally financed a large portion of the budget and made a point for it to become a big-screen theatrical release. Box office risk was always part of the equation.

In fourth place, Bad Boy: Ride or Die took in $10.3 million for $165 million overall domestically. And in fifth place, Indian Telugu-language sci-fi epic Kalki 2898-AD made its U.S. debut with $5.2 million. With Independence Day approaching, new and old releases will have an extra long holiday weekend to jockey for the top of the box office. And while it might be easy to assume Inside Out 2 will win once again… never underestimate the power of the Minions.
