Box Office Round-Up ~ 7/17/24

Despicable Me 4 unsurprisingly won its sophomore weekend in theaters with $43.5 million, putting it past $210 million overall in the U.S., which is good enough for the third highest grossing release of 2024. That said, at least one new release outperformed expectations as horror title Longlegs, starring Maika Monroe and Nicolas Cage, debuted in second place with a strong $22 million.

It’s the best debut for an original (non-IP) horror movie since last year’s M3GAN and most successful opening weekend ever for distributor Neon (Parasite, Ferrari, Immaculate).

Inside Out 2 took third place, continuing its tremendous theatrical run with $19.9 million for a domestic total of $571 million. In fourth place, A Quiet Place: Day One passed the $100 million mark with a third-weekend total of $11.3 million.

Another new release took fifth place this past weekend, as romantic comedy Fly Me to the Moon debuted with $9.4 million. Rom-coms have been relegated mostly to streaming in the past few years, and Fly Me to the Moon is in fact the only rom-com scheduled for theatrical release in 2024. It’s a sad state of affairs for a genre that was once a movie theater date night standard.
