Box Office Round-Up ~ 6/25/24
Emotions ran high at the box office this past weekend as Inside Out 2 had a stellar sophomore performance, grossing $101 million to pass $350 million overall in the U.S. In just two weekends, it has toppled Dune: Part Two to become the highest grossing movie of 2024. And at the rate it’s going, it may overtake the majority of 2023’s top grossers before its theatrical run is over.
Bad Boys: Ride or Die grossed $18.8 million in its third weekend. It’s just shy of $150 million overall. making it the second most successful installment in the franchise, after 2020’s Bad Boys For Life (whether or not it passes that film’s $204 million remains to be seen).
The weekend’s only major new release, The Bikeriders from writer/director Jeff Nichols (Take Shelter, Loving), debuted in third place with a solid $9.6 million. It’s the only major adult-centered drama in theaters at the moment, so it should benefit from a lack of competition outside of next week’s Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 1.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes took fourth place after seven weeks in theaters with $3.8 million for a domestic total of $164 million. The Garfield Movie rounded out the top five with $3.7 million for $85 million total.
The final weekend of June sees the premiere of the aforementioned Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 1 from director/star Kevin Costner as well as horror prequel A Quiet Place: Day One. Neither one is a lock to unseat Inside Out 2, which has rapidly become the savior of the 2024 summer movie season.
