Box Office Round-Up ~ 9/26/22
Perhaps proof that there’s no such thing as a bad press, Don’t Worry, Darling rode a wave of alleged behind-the-scenes drama to the top of the box office this weekend, with a debut gross of $19.35 million. The weekend numbers were low again across the board, as the fall movie season has yet to truly kick into high gear. In its second weekend, The Woman King took in a solid $11 million, dropping only 41% from its debut. It will likely make back its $50 million budget over the next few weeks as it expands internationally. In third place was a blast from the past, as James Cameron’s 2009 groundbreaking Avatar returned to theaters in anticipation of Avatar: The Way of Water this winter. While it didn’t win the weekend, its respectable $10.5 million bodes well for Cameron and 20th Century Studios (now under the Disney umbrella), who naturally have high hopes for their long-awaited sequel. Perhaps fittingly as we head into October, two horror titles rounded out the top five. Barbarian and Pearl grossed a respective $4.8 million and $1.9 million, incredibly solid numbers considering their small budgets. They may see some competition next week from the heavily marketed Smile, to say nothing of Halloween Ends in mid-October, but overall it’s a good time of year to be a scary movie.
