Box Office Round-Up ~ 2/6/23

February is here, and with it comes the end of Avatar: The Way of Water’s reign at the top of the box office charts. In its place were two new releases, both doing solid debut numbers. In the top spot was M. Night Shyamalan’s apocalyptic thriller Knock at the Cabin. The director of The Sixth Sense and Signs isn’t quite the box office draw he used to be, but Shyamalan has posted a consistent enough track record of $20 million-plus opening weekends for Knock’s $14.1 million to feel like a bit of a letdown. Still, unseating James Cameron is nothing to sneeze at.

With that in mind, fellow new release 80 for Brady did surprisingly better than expected, taking second place with a debut gross of $12.7 million. Led by Jane Fonda, Rita Moreno, Lily Tomlin and Sally Field, the football-centric ensemble comedy drew in an older audience that has of late avoided theaters, which bolstered its debut numbers similar to last fall’s Ticket to Paradise.

The dethroned Avatar: The Way of Water took third place with $11.3 million. It has made it into the top ten all-time domestic releases, but will need strong holds through February to pass its James Cameron sibling, Titanic. In its seventh weekend, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish cleared $150 million overall domestic with a weekend total of $7.8 million. Rounding out the top five was South Korean concert documentary BTS: Yet to Come in Cinemas with $5.1 million, unsurprising considering the K-Pop boy band’s international appeal.
