The Lead Sheet ~ 8/25/2026

The Lead Sheet is your guide to this week’s new music - taking a look at newly released albums, who made them, and how listeners are responding.

‘90s nerd-rock legends Weezer are back with another color-themed, self-titled LP, Weezer (Gold Album), marking 32 years since their 1994 debut, Weezer (Blue Album)Weezer’s early days created megahits like “Island in the Sun”, “Beverly Hills”, and “Say It Ain’t So”, but the group’s music career has had a number of ups and downs since. Gold Album, however, has won over longtime fans and critics for re-capturing what originally made Weezer great; high-energy, big rock hooks, and witty lyricism. Gold Album is also one of Weezer’s most collaborative records to date, with each member of the band contributing as writers. Karly Hartzman, lead singer for up-and-coming indie rock band Wednesday, lends vocals to the album’s standout song, “We Might as Well Be Strangers”. Critics note that this LP is distinctly angrier than their past work, and sounds refreshingly organic thanks to the rejection of popular production crutches like auto-tune and click-track recording. To recreate their low-budget garage band sound, Weezer opted instead to record live together in the style of their first albums. Overall, reception has been excellent, and Weezer will kick off a massive global stadium tour on September 8th, with stops in North America, the UK, Europe, Japan, and Australia.

Manchester based indie-rock four-piece Westside Cowboy celebrate the debut of their first LP  It Goes On, which released this weekend to outstanding reviews from major publications like RollingStone and Paste Magazine. The young band formed in 2023, but has made major waves in indie rock, winning Glastonbury Festival’s Emerging Talent competition in 2025, and recently touring with Geese. Westside Cowboy’s sound is a part of subgenre lovingly dubbed “Britainnicana”, which borrows American blues and folk elements but with regionally British imagery and vocals. It Goes On demonstrates this idea with use of twangy guitar resonators, and bright country harmonies. The group has quickly gained momentum, but maintains a slacker-rock aesthetic, not ever taking themselves too seriously. It Goes On doesn’t feature any guest artists, but this gives Westside Cowboy plenty of room to establish their unique sound. Westside Cowboy will hit the road for a big headlining tour from August 25th-December 5th throughout the UK, Ireland, and Europe.

Celebrated frontman for The KillersBrandon Flowers, released his third solo album on Friday, titled Thrasher. This is his first solo effort in eleven years, and sees Flowers try his hand at Country-Western and Honkey Tonk, to mostly positive reviews. Thrasher paints a cinematic western picture with clever use of acoustic and steel guitars, as well as harmonicas and mariachi horns. Thematically similar to The Killers’ Pressure MachineThrasher explores Flowers’ Utah adolescence and offers intimate narrative pieces instead of big stadium hits. The album reaches its emotional climax with “One of Us”, a poignant and reflective elegy for Flower’s late brother-in-law. Most listeners and critics see the album as an authentic journal entry in Americana, but some find Flowers' vocals heavy-handed, and prefer the synth-pop sound of his last album, The Desired Effect. Brandon Flowers will tour the new album starting August 28th, for 17 performances in North America and 9 in the UK and Ireland.

For decades, Los Angeles native singer-songwriter Julia Holter has been known for her avante garde orchestrations, which often include multitracked vocals, rich electronic textures, and literary inspirations. This week, she released her seventh studio album, Materia to excellent reviews, though it scores slightly lower than average in her discography. Materia is also smaller in scale, and stripped back in production. Holter experiments with song structure, approaching each track with a sprawling improvisational sound rather than a typical pop chorus payoff. In terms of genre, Materia lives firmly in art-pop and ambient jazz, and experimental jazz vocalist Jessika Kenney sings a hallucinatory duet with Holter on “Materia 2”. Most platforms praise the new work as a creative triumph, but for some, that creativity pushes too far into the abstract, causing great ideas to meander into vague musical interludes that take too long to culminate. As of right now, Julia Holter has not announced any tour plans for this new album, since it functions as more of a companion piece to her 2024 work Something in the Room She Moves

After teaming up for the highly rated EP Unlocked, along with remix version Unlocked 1.5Denzel Curry Kenneth Blume successfully launched their first LP, ii, to phenomenal ratings and reviews from fans and critics. Denzel Curry is known for being a pioneer of the early soundcloud rap era, and his music is stamped with highly versatile flow structure and deeply introspective lyricism. Kenneth Blume, (formerly known as Kenny Beats) is a five-time grammy nominated producer, and has expanded his scope beyond rap production to include film scoring, indie-rock, and post-hardcore music. As a team, the two describe their process as a “tug-of-war”, often approaching song creation from opposite schools of thought, and fighting their way toward a middle, common-ground. For ii, Curry and Blume agreed on a minimalist frame, avoiding overworked post-production with simple vintage gear like an SP-404 sampler and low-budget microphones, which compliment the boom-bap sound. Thematically, ii is concerned with identity within an evolving hip-hop genre, imposter syndrome, and the balance of giving fans more of the same, but staying true to the artist’s intention to break new ground. ii has already received widespread critical acclaim, but the duo have no plans to tour together, instead focusing on their independent careers.
