Series Snapshot ~ 4/2/2026
Welcome to the Series Snapshot, a weekly deep dive into the shows topping the streaming charts.
Netflix’s One Piece continues to hold its spot at the top, ahead of Detective Hole and Something Very Bad is Going to Happen. The popular anime’s second season was released in “binge” format, allowing viewers to enjoy all eight episodes without waiting for weekly installments. While some series seem to benefit from cultivating anticipation with timed releases, Netflix has captured maximum engagement, and season one has even seen a spike in viewership because of it. One Piece’s success comes from several factors, a large, dedicated fanbase of the original anime, its honoring of the source material in tone and style, and a breakneck pace, condensing lengthy arcs and keeping fan-favorite moments. Its cast of Iñaki Godoy, Emily Rudd, and Mackenyu bring One Piece’s protagonists to life, and fans approve of the casting and performances. One Piece is now considered the most successful anime series adaptation ever, with season two receiving particularly positive praise for fullheartedly embracing the original show’s weirdness and massive scope. One Piece was created by Matt Owens and Steven Maeda.
At Hulu, post-apocalypse thriller Paradise, is again most watched, following a successful season two finale on Monday. The finale scored highly, with glowing praise for Julianne Nicholson’s fantastic performance as Sinatra. In some metrics, season two is rated even higher than season one, avoiding the common season two slump. This is likely due to a bold genre switch between seasons that viewers have now fully embraced. Sterling K. Brown is Paradise’s emotional heartbeat, playing secret service agent Xavier Collins with nuance and depth. The series also shines thanks to James Marsden, Shailene Woodley, and most recently, Enuka Oduma, who plays Xavier’s wife Teri with astounding chemistry and vulnerability. Season two’s ending was a perfect tee-up for season three, once again shifting genres and leaving fans on the edge of their seats. Season three is expected sometime in early 2027. Paradise was created by Dan Fogelman.
HBO’s realistic medical drama The Pitt takes a victory lap, maintaining its lead over Rooster. Doctors have recently expressed appreciation for The Pitt’s portrayal of some of the more frustrating, unglamorous parts of working in healthcare. Tortuous insurance processes, corporate overreach, and disgruntled patients are all folded into the story. Medical dramas like House MD and Grey’s Anatomy often focused on a singular patient or plotpoint, but what makes The Pitt so gripping is the sheer number of emergencies per hour, not all of which end happily. At any moment, the team could lose their patient, and their insurance doesn’t cover plot armor. The Pitt stars Noah Wyle, Katherine LaNasa, Patrick Ball, and Taylor Dearden. Season two’s finale is scheduled for April 16th. The Pitt was created by R. Scott Gemmill.
For Amazon Prime, Guy Ritchie’s Young Sherlock reclaims the top-title, ahead of Scarpetta and Invincible. The famous detective’s youthful makeover has proven a big hit, and while Amazon hasn’t officially confirmed a greenlit second season, series producers have disclosed that they are already developing it. Ritchie’s new version receives praise for giving a fresh take on the classic characters; Holmes and Moriarty are not mortal enemies, but schoolmates at Oxford. Played by Hero Fiennes Tiffin and Donal Finn, respectively, the Duo’s screen chemistry has captivated critics and audiences. Colin Firth also gets frequent shout-outs for his gravitas as the season’s antagonist Dean of Oxford, Sir Bucephalus Hodge. Critics point out that the series’ plot drags in the middle episodes, and the finale feels rushed while trying to tie up many loose ends, but in all, Young Sherlock succeeds as a clever re-imagining of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s iconic adventures. Young Sherlock was created by Matthew Parkhill.
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters defends its spot again, just ahead of For All Mankind and Shrinking. Now halfway through its second season, Legacy of Monsters has continued to impress audiences with its stunning visual effects and CG creature battles. The sci-fi action series delivered bold casting; Kurt Russell and his son Wyatt play the same character, Colonel Lee Shaw over two timelines, one in the 1950’s and the other 2015. Both actors give excellent performances with seamless continuity between the two time periods. Season two also sees the focus shift from Godzilla to Kong and Skull Island, as well as a lurking new threat, “Titan X”. Apple plans to continue the series through a large deal with Legendary Entertainment, including more seasons, spinoffs, and a prequel series. With weekly installments, the season finale is set for May 1st. Monarch: Legacy of Monsters was created by Chris Black and Matt Fraction.
Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette has proven to be a massive success at Disney Plus, with a strong lead against High Potential and Daredevil: Born Again. The Ryan Murphy biopic limited series portrays the turbulent relationship of the two socialites during the celebrity-gossip dominated 1990’s. The series finale aired March 26th, to high scores but divisive opinions; some found its pacing slow while others praised its restraint. The show’s success is largely due to breakout star Paul Anthony Kelly for his spitting image portrayal of JFK Jr., and Sarah Pidgeon who is consistently commended for her humanization of Carolyn Bessette, who was often unfairly scrutinized by tabloids during the relationship. Naomi Watts and Grace Gummer round out the cast as Jackie and Caroline Kennedy. Showrunner and creator Connor Hines has expressed interest in Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton for a potential follow-up, but there’s no official renewal from FX just yet.
