Box Office Round-Up ~ 1/1/25
The last box office weekend of 2024 concluded with many of the usual suspects remaining in the top five, with one new addition taking advantage of a Christmas Day opening. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 remained in the top spot, taking in $37 million to easily pass the $100 million mark overall. And while it had to settle for second, Mufasa: The Lion King actually improved in its sophomore weekend numbers, grossing $36.8 million to reach $113 million domestically.
Incongruously arriving on Christmas Day, the latest incarnation of Nosferatu debuted in third place, grossing $21.6 million over the weekend for $40.8 million overall since the holiday. Easily passing The Northman’s $34 million gross, it’s now the highest grossing film of writer/director Robert Eggers’ career.
Unsurprisingly, Wicked and Moana 2 took fourth and fifth place once again, getting a post-Christmas boost in numbers to gross $19.7 million and $18.9 million respectively, putting both movies at or above $400 million domestically.
