Box Office Round-Up ~ 4/17/24

A24’s pivot to blockbuster-level features paid off this past weekend, as Civil War rode a wave of buzz to the top of the box office. The (somewhat intentionally) controversial drama from writer/director Alex Garland (Ex Machina, Annihilation) debuted with $25.7 million, putting on a pace to become Garland’s most successful film to date. It will easily land among A24’s top ten or even top five releases when all is said and done.

In second place, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire grossed $15.5 million to pass the $150 million marker in its third weekend in theaters. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire remained in third place with $5.7 million, putting it just shy of $100 million domestically as it enters its second month of release.

In fourth place, Kung Fu Panda 4 remained in the top five for a sixth weekend, grossing $5.5 million, while Dune: Part Two rounded out the pack with $4.3 million, passing $270 million in the U.S. as it nears the end of two months in theaters.

This coming weekend sees the latest from Guy Ritchie with The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare as well as a vampire ballerina thriller in Abigail and a Bigfoot family drama in the wide release of Sasquatch Sunset. A little something for everyone.
