Box Office Round-Up ~ 4/10/24

As predicted, Godzilla and Kong remained kings of the box office this past weekend, as Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire topped the charts with a sophomore gross of $31.2 million. The giant monster mash-up has passed $134 million in the U.S., with $150 million reachable within the next week.

It was a relatively slow weekend in general, with two new releases performing more or less in line with expectations. Monkey Man, from writer/director/star Dev Patel, took second place with a solid $10.1 million. It just managed to beat out Ghostbusters: The Frozen Empire, which landed in third place in its third weekend with $9 million. With $88 million overall domestically, it may yet clear the $100 million mark but could end up being the weakest entry in the franchise since Ghostbusters II back in 1989.

The First Omen debuted in fourth place with $8.3 million. Solid numbers for the prequel to the 1976 horror classic from director Richard Donner, but it may see some competition next weekend from Abigail and the weekend after from the theatrical re-release of Alien. Last but certainly not least in the top five, Kung Fu Panda 4 held strong as the family-friendly counter programming, grossing $7.7 million and passing $165 million overall. It’s now the highest-grossing chapter in the franchise since the 2008 original.
